Wivenhoe, Essex — Saturday 18 October 2025, 7:00–8:30 pm
As autumn shadows lengthen and Halloween draws near, Tales for The Witching Hour invites audiences to step into a world where folklore, music, and imagination entwine.
Hosted in the candlelit beauty of St Mary’s Church, Wivenhoe, this evocative evening features Joy Smith — harpist, percussionist, and storyteller — performing an entrancing blend of live harp music, dark folklore, and twisted fairy tales.
Drawing inspiration from the Witch Finder General to the imagination of Angela Carter, Joy’s performance brings together haunting soundscapes, rich storytelling, and flashes of mischievous wit. The result is an hour and a half of immersive performance that’s at once spine-tingling, whimsical, and deliciously uncanny.
“It’s a celebration of the strange and the beautiful,” says Joy Smith. “Each story has a heartbeat of its own — sometimes tender, sometimes unsettling — but always alive.”
