Wivenhoe Town Council has signed the land transfer agreement which will see the open space at Mede Way move into WTC ownership.
The agreement with Colchester City Council will secure the future of the open space and will enable the council’s ambitious plans to create a community asset residents can be proud of to be delivered.
Earlier this week the council secured a National Lottery grant which completed the funding for the new inclusive play space for children of primary school age.
While plans for the play space are well advanced, the land transfer will also enable the council to begin the consultation process for the creation of a community hub.
In singing the transfer on behalf of the council, Mayor, Councillor Jon Guy said: “This is a very important day for the people of Wivenhoe. We have long been seeking ways in which we can invest in the top of the town and create a community space which can be enjoyed by residents and children.
“We have to thank Colchester City Council for their help with the transfer. They have seen our vision for the site and are also determined that it should be secured for the town. We would also like to thank City Councillor Mark Cory who has worked with us to complete the transfer.
“With the future structure of local government in Essex still uncertain the people of Wivenhoe can rest assured that the Mede Way open space is now in safe and secure hands.
“The new year will see the council look to begin the consultation process over our plans for a community hub. It is a wonderful early Christmas present for Wivenhoe.”
