Upcoming Safety Improvements outside Millfields Primary

Upcoming Safety Improvements outside Millfields Primary

Dear Parents and Carers,

Over the past year, we’ve been working closely with the local community around Millfields Primary School to make the streets around local schools safer for everyone.

We are writing to inform you about upcoming highway improvement works taking place in the vicinity of the school. These measures are designed to enhance safety for children, families, and people travelling to and from the site.

What improvements are being introduced?

  • New zebra crossing to support safer and more confident pedestrian movement.
  • Red route restrictions operating 8:15–9:15am and 2:45–3:45pm, helping to reduce congestion and improve visibility around school entrances.
  • Footway resurfacing to provide a smoother, more accessible and safer walking surface.
  • New ‘Child Crossing’ road markings to increase driver awareness and encourage slower, more cautious driving near the school.

Construction schedule

Construction is planned to take place during the February 2026 school half term 16th Feb – 5th March. Any works required outside this period will be kept to a minimum and carefully managed to reduce disruption to families and the school community.

Healthy and safe ways to travel

We encourage families to walk, cycle or scoot to school whenever possible or take the bus. Choosing active travel has many benefits:

  • Improved safety: The new infrastructure is designed to help children cross the road more safely and reduce traffic-related risks near the school.
  • Better health and wellbeing: Walking, cycling and scooting help children stay active, support physical development, and contribute to better mental wellbeing.
  • Cleaner air: Fewer cars at drop-off and pick-up times help reduce pollution, creating a healthier environment for all our pupils.
  • Less congestion: More families choosing active travel makes the area around the school calmer and safer for everyone.

If you must use the car, please consider car sharing.
