Mayor’s Update 6th July 2026

Mayor’s Update

During my mayoral year, I hope to build on the work of my predecessors in connecting WTC with the community by posting occasional Mayoral updates with notices with items of interest and information.

  1. Upcoming Events:

Saturday 11th July 11am – 4pm World Cup children’s football event on the KGV. BBQ and bar, free drinks for children, all welcome.

Saturday 18th July 11am official opening of the Mede Way accessible playpark. (Councillors will be consulting on the proposed Community Hub opposite the playpark.)

September 5th. Community Day on the KGV- live music, BBQ & bar.

  1. Request for WTC Lay Members.

WTC benefits from the input from members of the public on several committees and working groups; in particular, we welcome lay members on our Health and Well-being, Communication and Events and Biodiversity working groups. The Traffic and Transport committee are also always on the lookout for more members. For more information contact townclerk@wivenhoe.gov.uk

  1. Mayoral Engagements

Monday May 25th. At the request of the Committee of Wivenhoe Housing Trust, I attended the Ground-Breaking ceremony of the 6 new almshouses to be built in Watsham Place, where I was asked to declare the site open by cutting the ribbon and was given a spade to “break the soil”. Cllr Shaun Boughton kindly escorted me. The land in that area is expected to be formally handed over to the Housing Trust by Cala Homes before the in July .

Wednesday 27th of May. I attended Mayor Making Ceremony of the new Mayor of Colchester in the impressive surroundings of Moot Hall. After the installation of the new Mayor, Andrew Ellis, my escort, Deputy Mayor Cllr Fiona Harmon and I enjoyed meeting the other guests at the reception.

Sunday 14th June. I joined dignatories from the Cinque Ports and other guests at the age-old ceremony of The Blessing of the Waters at Brightlingsea on Sunday 14th June, escorted by Mark Norrington.

Attendees processed ftom Brightlingsea centre to The Hard for a service of blessing and thanksgiving. The entire assembly then embarked on fishing smacks to take part in the din-making Beating of the Bounds and the blessing with prayers and holy water.

Saturday 27th June. I enjoyed chatting to people and listening to live music (courtesy of the Rocking Rev Justin Lammens and Cllr Glyn Evans) at the Congregation Church Strawberry Tea.

Tuesday June 30th. Cllrs Mark Cory, Fiona Harmon and I had an extremely interesting, enlightening time visiting Year 3 at Millfields School and their inspirational class teacher, Mrs Huckle. The children’s questions to us displayed their interest in learning about local government and our respective backgrounds.

Saturday 4th July. On a wonderful, Wivenhoe community day, I was joined by councillor colleagues on the WTC information stall, replying to queries from local residents and distributing consultation questionnaires re: the proposed Mede Way Community Hub.

In addition, I was delighted to cut the ribbon to launch the newly refitted Wivenhoe, Fingringhoe and Rowhedge Ferry, and enjoyed a trip to Rowhedge and back to Wivenhoe. Mayor
